Flat Optics: from wavefronts control into your smartphones
Abstract: Flat optical systems based on metasurfaces (arrays of subwavelength spaced nanoscale optical elements) are transforming the way light is manipulated by integrating imaging and sensing within a single ultrathin platform. This work follows the journey from fundamental advances in nanophotonics to real-world integration in smartphones.
Federico Capasso
Bio: Federico Capasso is the Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering with the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Capasso holds a Physics Doctorate from the University of Roma, La Sapienza. He joined Harvard University in 2003 after 27 years at Bell Labs. His key contributions include the invention of the quantum cascade laser, metasurface optics and the demonstration of repulsive Casimir forces.
