About this event

Watch Fitzcarraldo in your own time, then we will meet up to discuss! It is free to stream on Kanopy.

From Rotten Tomatoes: Opera-loving European Brian Fitzgerald lives in a small Peruvian city. Better known as Fitzcarraldo, this foreigner is obsessed with building an opera house in his town and decides that to make his dream a reality he needs to make a killing in the rubber business. In order to become a successful rubber baron, Fitzcarraldo hatches an elaborate plan that calls for a particularly impressive feat -- bringing a massive boat over a mountain with the help of a band of natives.

In an example of life imitating art, Les Blank directed Burden of Dreams (1982), which documented the chaotic production of Fitzcarraldo and the explosive relationship between Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski. According to Wikipedia, by the end of the shoot Blank compared his mental state to that of a Vietnam War veteran.

The event is free, but the monthly subscription to run the group is $40. There is a suggested donation of $5.00, but I want to keep the group accessible, so feel free to pay what/if you can. You can give cash or Venmo me @Lydia-Collins-6.
